Buffalo Thorn (Ziziphus mucronata) is a rare hardwood with a straight to interlocked grain.
The Afrikaans name for it is "wag-'n-bietjie", literally translated to "wait a bit". This aptly describes the tenacity of the straight and hooked thorns possessed by the tree.
The heartwood is yellow/brown with small streaks of dark reddish brown. The sapwood is yellow. It is moderately durable and planes to a fairly smooth finish.
The tree is often used as a natural fence. Other uses include jewelry boxes, heavy construction, tool handles and agricultural implements.
